London’s Air Ambulance, the Charity which runs London’s helicopter emergency medical service, is proud to announce that it is the designated air ambulance for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games (“the Games”).
In addition to providing Major Incident and serious injury cover for London during this time, London’s Air Ambulance medical teams will provide additional medical care at the following events:
* Mountain Biking, Hadleigh Farm;
* BMX, Olympic Park BMX Track; and
* Equestrian (Cross Country), Greenwich Park
Throughout the course of the London 2012 Games, it will be business as usual for London’s Air Ambulance, providing 24/7 life-saving care to victims of serious trauma in London. London’s Air Ambulance will supply additional doctor and paramedic teams who will be based at each event.
London’s Air Ambulance specialises in serious injury, with senior trauma doctors and specially trained paramedics providing life-saving medical interventions at the scene of incidents everyday in London. The medical teams are trained to carry out procedures on scene which are normally only found in hospital emergency departments – such as open chest surgery, administering anaesthetics and carrying out blood transfusions – when minutes are vital to a person’s survival and recovery.
Commenting on the Charity’s involvement with the Games, Dr Gareth Davies, Medical Director and Chair of the Trustees, said: “It is a great honour to be part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We provide a unique service for Londoner’s delivering advanced medical care at the scene of an incident and are renowned throughout the world for our work with seriously injured patients. We will ensure we provide additional medical care to any events which we may be needed at, augmenting the response of the LOCOG medical teams.
“Our service will carry on providing 24/7 trauma care to the Capital as usual throughout the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our doctors, paramedics, pilots and fire crew will be on hand for those who fall prey to serious injury through unfortunate circumstances and we will ensure they have the best possible chance of survival and recovery.”
During the Games, London will experience an influx of visitors from all round the World which will increase the demand for London’s Air Ambulance.
