US House Passes Bill to Fund FAA

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill by a vote of 252-172 to fund the FAA and bring the agency’s furloughed employees back to work, but it faces Democratic opposition in the Senate. The measure is the latest step in the House’s strategy to try to reopen the government one agency at a time.

The White House issued a veto threat against a “mini CR” that would allow some FAA funding through mid-December in order to avoid furloughs. The veto language, issued moments after the House passed the bill, is similar to that used by the White House to threaten a veto of other piecemeal funding bills passed by the House and criticizes the scattershot approach rather than the bills’ substance.

“Consideration of appropriations legislation in this manner is not a serious or responsible way to run the United States government. Instead of opening up a few government functions, the House of Representatives should re-open all of the government,” reads a Statement of Administration Policy on the FAA bill. The veto threat is entirely symbolic, considering that the Senate has shown no interest in taking any of these piecemeal funding bills up.
