Local press is reporting that Cyprus’ Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou and Defence Minister Photis Photiou last week signed a Memorandum of Understanding to coordinate the operation of the country’s AgustaWestland AW139 helicopters. From the text of the official announcement, the MoU paves the way for coordination between the Police and National Guard, including a joint training initiative, to better serve the operational needs of each organisation. In particular, there will be joint operations for SAR, firefighting and aerial patrol. The expectation is also set that the new coordination will optimize security and control of the coastline, while reducing the cost.
The National Guard of Cyprus operates three AW139s, while the Police have two. AgustaWestland accounced the orders in December 2008 and January 2009 respectively.
