St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center is hosting an open house on Saturday, November 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Flight for Life Colorado’s Lifeguard 4 helicopter based at the hospital.

Lifeguard 4 will land on the northwest lawn, outside the Dorcy Cancer Center at 11:30 a.m. to kick off the brief program, emceed by KKTV personality, David Nancarrow. Guests are invited to tour the Lifeguard 4 helicopter and meet the Flight For Life crew.  Call (719) 557-4639 to RSVP.

Lifeguard 4, the Flight For Life helicopter based at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center has provided valuable air ambulance service for southern Colorado communities since 2004. Every patient transported is cared for by qualified flight nurses and paramedics who are trained in pre-hospital, emergency and intensive care. This service makes the transfer of critically ill and injured patients much more time efficient than ground travel, and is available 24 hours a day.

Flying from the southeastern edges of Colorado to northern New Mexico, Lifeguard 4 has the largest rescue area of all the Flight For Life helicopters. St. Mary-Corwin is the only hospital south of Colorado Springs that provides these services out of Pueblo.

In the past 10 years, Lifeguard 4 has completed over 4,100 patient transports and is one of the busiest helicopters in the program. They will transport anyone, regardless of their financial resources or insurance coverage. Flight For Life patients range from newborns, to elderly patients who need help and rescue in many settings and situations. The basic principle of Flight For Life is for the crew to take the intensive care unit to the patient and deliver critical care while traveling to the receiving facility.

Flight For Life Colorado was the first hospital-based air ambulance for civilians in the United States. Today there are more than 300 air medical programs throughout the country that are all based on the Flight For Life Colorado model.
