The development application to install a floating helipad on Perth’s Swan River has been approved by the Western Australia Department of Parks and Wildlife. An Expression of Interest (EOI) was released in 2013 for a new helipad in the CBD to aid tourism, but was later retracted as the costs could not be met.
Brett Campany, of Skyline Aviation, and his business partner James Guest started their own independent research throughout 2013 and 2014, reports Australian Aviation. They met with numerous departments of the City of Perth, the Department of Parks and Wildlife and even the Swan River Trust. They discussed the idea of a low profile helipad that would be simplistic in design and keep in mind the visual impact it would have on the Swan Riverbank.
Their plans, once completed, were recommended for approval and are still in the final stages of approval. Skyline Aviation is working with a marine engineer on the helipad’s design. They are using the CubiSystem as a flotation device, for the netting, deck and frame. When the helipad is complete, it should be able to hold an AW139 sized helicopter.
