Thirty local, state, and federal law enforcement personnel learned firsthand about the state and federal missions conducted by the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing during a Nov. 2 visit to F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base.

The day’s orientation focused on the wing’s role in combat and peacetime search and rescue missions and the 106th’s response capabilities to state emergencies like natural disasters, humanitarian efforts, and civil disturbances.

The visit was planned by Chief Master Sgt. Harold Rowan, the 106th human resources advisor and Senior Master Sgt. Thomas D’Auria, the planning and programs superintendent for the 106th Security Forces Squadron.

The visitors toured the flightline and learned about the wing’s HC-130J Combat King II and HH-60G Pave Hawk rescue aircraft, which are vital in both search and rescue missions and state emergency responses.

The agencies also discussed the ways the Air Guard can aid law enforcement when called upon by the state.

“Our goal was to give local law enforcement a comprehensive understanding of the 106th’s mission and capabilities, particularly how we can collaborate when the state activates us,” D’Auria said.

Upon arrival, law enforcement members gathered in the Wing auditorium, where they engaged in discussions, fostering new partnerships.

Detective Frank Gould from the Suffolk County Police Department appreciated the detailed insight into the base’s operations.

“Every visit here adds to our understanding of how we can work together more effectively,” Gould said.

D’Auria recognized the significant insights and strengthened relationships that emerged from the orientation.

“Today was a great achievement in fostering collaboration,” he said. “We’ve broadened our mutual understanding, which is key.”

The 106th Rescue Wing, based at F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, New York, operates and maintains the HC-130J Combat King II search and rescue aircraft, and the HH-60G Pave Hawk rescue helicopter. The 106th RQW is home to a special warfare squadron with pararescuemen and combat rescue officers, specializing in rescue and recovery, and deploys for domestic and overseas operations.
