Tehama County Sheriff have added a Bell UH-1, acquired at no cost through the U.S. Department of Defense. All operational and maintenance expenses are fully covered through grants, California state discretionary funds, donations, and money seized from drug traffickers.
This long-overdue resource is a critical addition to Tehama County. Spanning over 3,000 square miles, our county will greatly benefit from this new tool, which will significantly enhance our ability to provide care and support across all of our communities.
The helicopter will serve a variety of vital public safety functions, including search and rescue operations, patrol support, emergency evacuations, and more.
Pilots and flight crew have been training over the past year to prepare for critical missions, and we’re finally ready to take to the skies—serving our community!
Tehama County Sheriff will also be extending service to over nine North State counties, funded through the same grants, seized assets, and discretionary funds from those jurisdictions.
As a startup unit, we’ll be rolling out gradually. But with the support of the Airborne Public Safety Association (APSA) and our regional aviation partners, this public-use helicopter will serve as a life-saving resource for Tehama County and the entire North State region!
Some of the onboard equipment includes a donated $600,000 thermal imaging camera system (FLIR), a rescue hoist, and an external cargo hook, which will eventually allow us to assist in wildfire suppression and the eradication of illegal, remote, cartel-operated marijuana grows.
The unit held their first publicly announced training on April 30th at Red Bluff Airport.
