The Botswana Defence Force has purchased an AW189K from Leonardo.  The helicopter has been seen carrying out test flights in Italy in recent days, as seen in the image here. The AW189K is powered by two 2500 hp Aneto-1K turboshafts, while all other AW189s have General Electric CT7-2E1 engines with max takeoff power of 1985 hp.

Leonardo originally announced Gulf Helicopters  as the launch customer for the AW189K, but the Qatari offshore operator only took delivery of GE powered AW189s.  The original airframe in Gulf colours was later repainted matt black and used as an AW149 demonstrator to the British military under the NMH “New Military Helicopter” Puma-replacement program, before later being reconfigured into the offshore role and sold to Omni in Brazil via a lease with GDHF under the local registration PR-OOW.

The second AW189K was delivered in a VIP configuration to Qatar in spring 2023, carrying a white and burgundy scheme to match their national flag colours.

The third example is seen here in the same colours as the VIP Airbus H225 currently flown by the Botswana Defence Force, including the national flag on the engine covers.  It is likely to be delivered to the southern African country within two to three months.
