On Tuesday 24 March 2026, the centenary ceremony of the 83rd SAR (Search and Rescue) Group took place at the 15th Wing base in Cervia (RA), a milestone that encompasses one hundred years of operational evolution, dedication and spirit of service.
Over the course of a century, the 83rd Squadron has represented a fundamental benchmark in the Italian Air Force’s search and rescue capabilities, constantly adapting to evolving operational scenarios: from the first aerial reconnaissance missions to transatlantic flights, from the deployment of sea rescue squadrons to modern Combat SAR operations. A path characterized by continuous technological and training innovation, always guided by the founding values of service to the community.
The numbers clearly demonstrate the impact of this operational legacy: over 800 rescue missions completed and thousands of lives saved, often in extremely complex weather and environmental conditions, confirming the high level of readiness and professionalism of the crews.
The ceremony was well attended, with civil and military authorities in attendance, as well as numerous current and former members of the Group, united by a strong sense of belonging and shared operational experience.
During the speeches, Major Simone Agostinelli , Commander of the 83rd SAR Group, Colonel Antonio Viola , Commander of the 15th Wing, and Air Major General Alessandro De Lorenzo , Commander of the Mobility and Support Forces Command, emphasized the excellence of the personnel and the value of a tradition built over time. Special emphasis was given to remembering those who lost their lives in the line of duty, an example of dedication and sacrifice.
Among the day’s highlights was the unveiling of the official Centenary logo and the special color livery dedicated to the anniversary, symbols of the Group’s identity and history.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, two HH-139 helicopters flew over the Cervia base in formation, performing the traditional “handover of the flag” to the tune of the National Anthem.
With this important milestone, the 83rd SAR Group inaugurates its second century of activity, confirming itself as one of the most operational and representative entities of the Air Force, always ready to intervene promptly and competently, faithful to its motto: “so that others may live” .
