Boosting the mission’s ability to airlift personnel and supplies in South Sudan, 120 Rwandan aviation troops arrived today to join UNMISS (United Naitons Mission in Southern Sudan) in the capital Juba.
The contingent brings with it six helicopters. Three arrived yesterday with 18 personnel, while the remaining helicopters are expected in coming days. Rwanda has also sent aviation equipment by road.
In addition to airlifting personnel and supplies, the aviation units will assist UNMISS in conducting rescues and medical evacuations.
The units will mainly be based in Juba, but will also deploy to the Jonglei State capital Bor to support the mission in bringing lasting peace to this volatile area.
